Best Practice Guidance

Overview

The SCI, in collaboration with its project partners from the Light Steel Forum, was successful in acquiring co-funding from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) through the  UK Futures Programme.  The objective of the project was to address the best practice information needs of the steel-based offsite construction sector; light steel framing and modular construction.

The project was based on strong industry involvement which was required to ensure that the project outputs were credible and provided appropriate guidance for the sector. A project steering group was setup, which in addition to SCI and UKCES, included members of the Light Steel Forum, Build Off-Site, NHBC, CITB and Premier Guarantee.

Guidance and Training

There are two main aspects to the outputs from this best practice project:

  1. Best practice information sheets for use by all parties involved with light steel framing; from architects to installers and site managers to structural engineers.
  2. An online best practice training course in the form of a VLE (virtual learning environment). Initially this was setup as a trial site and hosted by the University of Surrey.
