This publication provides guidance on the completion of an ‘Appendix 18/1’ document to be used in conjunction with the specifications for steelwork specified to BS EN 1090-2:2018. The guidance is in the form of additional requirements that may be included in the project specific Appendix 18/1 document or in Appended Documents. The clauses, which have been compiled by the members of SCI’s Steel Bridge Group, represent an industry ‘best practice’ view and follow the numbering of the National Highways Sample Contract Specific Appendix 18/1: Requirements for Structural Steelwork. They are presented in the form of a two column addition to the sample Appendix 18/1 table: the first column presents the model clauses and the second presents a commentary, giving background or reference to further advice. A second table is provided to assist the specifier with the completion of the steelwork testing specifications which are required to be listed in separate Contract Specific Appendix 1/5.

Note: P418 and P451 are both current publications and the correct guidance for the 'Appendix 18/1' specification must be selected. Refer to P418 for client specifications based on BS EN 1090-2:2008, and P451 for those based on BS EN 1090-2:2018. P451 is also suitable, with minimal amendment, for future specifications adopting the BS EN 1090-2:2018+A1:2024 amendments
